Ophthalmological Society of Assam was formed in 10 th April 1967, formarly known as All Assam Ophthalmological Society of Assam under the stewardship of Late Prof. L. C. Dutta.
It should be mentioned that amongst all the discipline of medicine AAOS was the first professional organization of the state. The first annual conference of the society was held at Guwahati Medical College which was chaired by Dr. G. S. Guha of Shillong. The first Hony. General Secretary was late Prof. L. C. Dutta.
Since inception AAOS is organizing it’s conferences annually. Also since last 8 years AAOS is organizing mid term conferences. Now a days the Annual Conference is of two days duration where two main theme subjects are discussed while the mid term conference is of one day duration with only a single theme topic.

Dr L. C. Dutta was doyen of Ophthalmology in NE region. Majority of the Senior Ophthalmologist practicing in this region are either his direct student or their examiner during different under graduate or post graduate course . Born in the year 1924 at Dergaon Assam , Dr Dutta graduated from Cotton College . Then he went to BHU to complete his BSc degree. He joined Assam Medical College as second batch student in the year 1948. After completing his MBBS he went to UK for FRCS. He successfully completed the FRCS and came back to India.
