Founder

Dr L. C. Dutta was doyen of Ophthalmology in NE region. Majority  of the  Senior  Ophthalmologist  practicing  in this  region are  either  his  direct  student  or  their  examiner  during  different under graduate  or post  graduate  course . Born in the  year  1924  at  Dergaon  Assam , Dr  Dutta  graduated  from Cotton College . Then he  went  to BHU   to  complete  his  BSc  degree. He joined Assam Medical College as second batch student in the year 1948. After completing his MBBS he went to UK for FRCS. He successfully completed the FRCS and came back to  India. 

In the  year  1962  he    stated  the  Ophthalmology  dept  in Guwahati  Medical College . The  dept.  became  one  of the  pioneer  dept  in entire  India. There  were  plenty  of  research  paper  published  from  this  dept  in   national  and  international  forum . Dr  Dutta  compiled   two  books  of  different  volumes   which  are  considered  to be  few  authentic books  for  Under graduate and  post  graduate  course  not  in India  but  also  in abroad .

 He was instrumental in formation of All Assam and North Eastern Regional Ophthalmological   Societies. Since the formation of All Assam Ophthalmological Society in the  year 1967 he  had  attended  all the  conferences   held till  date. Appreciating  his  contribution  towards  Modern  Ophthalmology  in India  All  India  Ophthamological  Society   had  conferred  him with  the  Award of Life  Time  Achievement  Award the  highest  award  instituted  by  the  second  largest  Ophthalmological  body in  the  world .

He was the founder of Gauhati Blind School in the year 1975. Traveled through different parts of the country in search of knowledge Dr Dutta was the examiner of under graduate and post  graduate examination of different Medical colleges of India. He was instrumental in formation of  Regional Institute of Ophthalmology in Guwahati. This is the apex organization in NE region  for  Ophthalmic care and research instituted by Govt of India  Since  he  started  the  concept  of  Eye  Camp  since   1965  he  had  done  thousands  of  Eye  operations  in remote  part  of this  region .

He  was  dynamic  till  his  last  breath. Even  on the  previous  day of his  demise  he   served  the  needy  person  searching  for light . The   icon   of   NE  ophthalmology  world  has  left  for  his  heavenly   abode  on  11th  January  2008.   Both his   eyes were  utilized  to two  blind  persons   after his  death  This  was  his  philosophy in life to  serve  the  needy  in search  of  light.
